The Early Years

In these vital years, Brandeston gives its children the opportunity to grow and develop in the secure surroundings of the Pre-Preparatory Department. Children learn and play in small classes taught by specialist teachers supported by trained Nursery assistants in a modern development of four classrooms around a central courtyard. From the earliest days of Kindergarten, pupils are encouraged to become independent and self-assured whilst learning to play together They gain confidence in reading and number, and play extends to supervised exploration of the countryside beyond the school gates. From five years of age, the children begin to learn in a more systematic way. Nevertheless, we always look at our children as individuals when assessing their needs and developing capabilities. In addition to the important core studies, French, Music, Movement, Drama and other creative activities are part of the pupils' everyday experience.

In the final Pre-Prep year, the children are prepared for their move to the Lower School. The children work more often on their own initiative, or learn to work as part of a group of pupils. With teacher assistance, they learn to set and meet their own targets, while assessments are conducted on a more formal basis. If you are looking for a school that challenges children both in their work and in their play, then Brandeston Pre-Preparatory Department meets all these aspirations and more. Above all, life at Brandeston is intended to make our children both happy and fulfilled, where learning is an enjoyable experience and there is always a sense of fun.
